Schill Expands into Michigan with 2 Acquisitions

Schill Grounds Management announced the acquisition and partnership of Begonia Brothers Services and Atlas Outdoor, marking its expansion into Southeast Michigan and strengthening its ability to serve commercial clients with multi-site properties.

These are Schill’s first acquisitions in Michigan. With 19 acquisitions completed, Schill now operates 34 branches across the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Southwestern Ontario, Canada, and continues to grow through partnerships and organic expansion.

Begonia Brothers Services brings nearly 30 years of experience providing landscaping, lawn care, snow removal, and related services throughout Southeast Michigan. Led by owners Peter and Ann Bonde and founder and commercial division leader Mike McDonald, the company serves both residential communities and commercial properties across the Metro Detroit and Northville areas. The company employs 45 team members.

Atlas Outdoor, founded in 2011 by Sam and Brandi Gembel, provides landscaping, lawn care, and snow services with branches in Flint and the Greater Detroit area. The company employs more than 110 team members and serves residential communities and commercial clients throughout the region.

Customers of both companies will continue working with their existing teams and contacts. Operations will be supported by Schill’s centralized systems, technology, purchasing power, and shared best practices across its 34-branch platform. The acquisitions bring Schill’s total headcount to 1,550 employees.

As part of the partnership, Sam and Brandi Gembel will remain actively involved in Atlas Outdoor, and Peter and Ann Bonde and Mike McDonald will continue to lead Begonia Brothers. This approach supports continuity for employees and customers while enabling long-term growth in the region.

Schill Grounds Management is pleased to announce the acquisition and partnership of Brogan Landscaping, a respected landscape maintenance and design/build provider serving Southeastern Pennsylvania for more than 25 years.

Based in the Delaware Valley and led by founder Steve Brogan, Brogan Landscaping brings a strong reputation for quality, reliability, and customer service to residential communities, commercial properties, and estates throughout the region. The acquisition adds two new branches to Schill’s growing Mid-Atlantic footprint and further solidifies Schill’s presence in Chester County and surrounding areas, complementing the company’s prior acquisition of Andrews Lawn & Landscaping. Brogan’s 50 employees bring Schill’s total headcount to more than 1,400 employees.

Andrew’s has deep roots in Chester County, Pennsylvania, and was founded in 2001 by Andrew Gabries, who began mowing lawns after school when he was a teenager. Gabries and his wife Kara have since grown the business into a full-service landscaping company with 40 employees that provides superior service to hundreds of commercial, multi-family, and residential clients.

The purchase of Andrew’s Lawn & Landscaping strengthens Schill’s presence in eastern Pennsylvania, complementing its previous acquisition of Strauser Nature’s Helpers, which has operations in the state.

Schill Acquires Pinnacle to Expand Further in Columbus

CLEVELAND AND COLUMBUS OHIO — JULY 10, 2024 — Schill Grounds Management has purchased and partnered with Pinnacle Landscaping to expand operations in Columbus, Ohio, after recently opening a Greenfield location in the area.

Partnering with Pinnacle gives Schill greater density and reach across Ohio and adjacent markets, from its headquarters in Cleveland through the Columbus corridor down through Cincinnati. Earlier this year, Schill opened a facility in the Blacklick area just east of Columbus to serve that market. Schill now has central Ohio operations in Blacklick, Marion, Nashport, Polaris and other markets in that region to better serve our clients.

Established in 2005, Pinnacle has been owned and operated by Brett Obenauf, Principal & Chief Financial Officer, and Rob McDevitt, Principal & Chief Operating Officer. They will continue to oversee the business in Columbus as Pinnacle becomes part of the Schill family of companies. About 75 Pinnacle employees will join Schill, which has a total headcount of around 1,200.

Pinnacle provides commercial landscape maintenance, snow and ice removal, and parking lot sweeping services to office, retail, hospitality, mixed-use, multi-family, and other commercial customers throughout the Columbus region.
